Aspire Foundation Grant: Disabled Wintersport Australia
Who is Disabled Wintersport Australia?
Established in 1978, Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) is responsible for adaptive winter sport in Australia. As part of the not-for-profit National Sporting Organisation (NSO), DWAs mission is to promote and foster the participation of people with disability in winter sports in Australia, ensuring individuals can participate safely and with dignity. They aim to reduce barriers and equal opportunities so people with disabilities can participate in their chosen winter sports. DWA collaborate closely with resort staff to deliver positive experiences, helping their members find freedom on the snow. Their members include everyone from recreational skiers and snowboarders to Winter Paralympians.
Aspire Foundation
At the core of the Aspire Foundation’s mission is the belief that education transforms lives. Our passion lies in supporting community members, especially those from marginalised groups, in achieving their educational goals. The Aspire Foundation focuses on enhancing access to vocational education and training (VET) and lifelong learning for all corners of the community. Our efforts focus on community-driven projects that target educational access for marginalised groups, tackle barriers to education, training and employment, and equip individuals with essential skills. Since joining the vibrant community at Ross House, we have discovered many wonderful and critical not-for-profit organisations and initiatives within the building. It became clear that we had an opportunity to extend an Aspire Foundation Grant to our resident and friends within Ross House. We were impressed by the quality and variety of submissions and have decided to share the wallet of grant opportunity across three successful applicants.
What is the project?
As part of their application to the Aspire Foundation Grant, DWA plans to develop effective recruitment materials and resources to attract participants for their guide training program and recruit high-quality volunteers. DWA’s offers a training framework for volunteers, starting from initial Level 1 (New Guide) to training in specific disability areas, such as sit ski or vision impaired skiers/snowboarders. By producing new recruitment materials and resources, DWA aims to engage more individuals as volunteers, enhancing the quality and reach of their programs.
Why did we approve this grant?
The Aspire Foundation approved this grant for DWA because their mission and initiatives closely align with our values and goals. DWA’s commitment to providing equal opportunities and reducing barriers for people with disabilities mirrors our dedication to supporting marginalised communities. Their project to develop recruitment materials for volunteer guides will enhance their ability to offer high-quality, inclusive winter sports experiences. By funding this project, we are promoting inclusion and community engagement, ensuring that individuals with disabilities have the opportunity to fully participate in winter sports.
